The #1 thing that will make your Social Media suck in 2013
A client of mine that is a hunter told me that he was once dropped off at Deer Tree Stand for a day of hunting alone. After getting him to his location, his friends rode off to their respective hunting spots planning to return 8 hours later. He prepared himself with glee to hunt all day until he reached in his pockets and remembered he was wearing his brand new hunting vest that he had forgotten to transfer his ammunition to. This was in the days before cell phones so he said he spent a boring day of “no hunting” hunting.
The story reminds me of businesses that often poise themselves online to market without a real marketing plan. Yeah they look ready to market online but they are missing the real “bullet” to make something happen, business marketing strategy. But unlike my hunting client in the former story, many of these businesses don’t know they are spending a boring time with “no marketing” online marketing.
Why don’t people have an overall marketing plan before they start on social media? Perhaps one of the following is an answer:
- They don’t know they need one. They think just doing something online, building a website or unlocking the front door of a business will bring a steady flow of customers. It won’t! They will be sitting there alone because the public doesn’t know they exist, what they do or why they do it.
- They are too cheap to hire a marketer that can make professional business strategy objectives and time goals for them. But they don’t understand how much poor marketing cost them in the long run.
- They assume that their team can come up with some marketing ideas at their staff/employee meetings. Who needs input from more people. But they don’t realize the team is really focused on managing, servicing, producing product or whatever they were hired to accomplish. Often times these brainstorming sessions develop little more than tactics and event ideas that will not bring the attention to their business that they need to bring profit and be successful.
No more excuses, arm your business, group or organization with a real professional plan that can help you be more profitable this year.
